Security in hospital is beefed up

Security has been beefed at Iten County Referral Hospital in Elgeyo-Marakwet county following a bizarre incident on Monday where a banditry patient was forcefully discharged by gunmen.

During the 2am incident which has sparked fears in the sleepy town, the patient who had been shot, escaped with the help of more than 10 heavily armed men.

Governor Wisley Rotich yesterday called on the residents and staff at the facility to remain calm as police conclude investigations into the incident.

“Even as we let police conclude their investigations over the matter, the brazen move by the gunmen to the extent of neutralizing security officers shows that we are insecure. On this note, we have requested for police officers drawn from the County Integrated Police Unit (CIPU) to guard the facility on a 24-hour basis,” said Rotich.
