Second teen arrested over disrespectful handling of Kenya flag at Nyayo Stadium
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a second arrest in connection with the desecration of Kenya’s national flag, intensifying efforts to address the incident that has sparked nationwide outrage.
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the DCI announced the apprehension of 14-year-old Muhidin Ahmed Abukar.
“14-year-old Muhidin Ahmed Abukar has this evening been arrested in connection with an incident involving desecration of Kenya’s national flag.”
This follows the earlier arrest of 17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf the same day. “His arrest follows the apprehension of another suspect and accomplice, namely Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, earlier in the day.”
Incident at Nyayo Stadium
The arrests stem from an incident that took place on September 20, 2025, during a CAF Champions League first-leg match between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC at Nyayo Stadium. In a statement, the DCI said, “The two have been processed pending further police action,” read the DCI statement.

The initial arrest of Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf was confirmed earlier when the DCI released a statement detailing the incident.
“17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, one of the individuals shown in the attached photo who was wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in connection with an incident involving the desecration of Kenya’s national flag, has been arrested.”
The agency noted that the incident occurred during the football match, where the two suspects were recorded disrespecting the flag, an action described as unlawful under Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblem & Names Act, Cap 99.
The behaviour involved a section of Mogadishu City Club supporters kicking the Kenyan flag, prompting widespread condemnation.
In response, the club issued an apology on September 24, 2025, stating, “During the CAF Champions League first-leg match between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC, an unfortunate incident occurred in which a few young fans were seen kicking the Kenyan national flag. On behalf of the Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the Government and People of Kenya.”
The club pledged support for Kenyan authorities in addressing the matter.
Swift justice
The incident has reignited tensions, with Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen calling for strict legal action, including prosecution and deportation. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, have also condemned the act, urging swift action. Both persons of interest are currently being processed as investigations continue.
