Sabina Chege hails Uhuru’s meeting with Ruto
Nominated MP Sabina Chege has expressed strong support for former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s meeting with President William Ruto held at State House on Friday, July 1, 2025.
Chege, while addressing residents of the Ndhiwa Constituency on the evening of Friday, August 1, 2025, stated that the meeting was a necessary step towards fostering unity in the country.
She criticised leaders who incite divisions only to retreat to Nairobi when tensions rise, leaving ordinary citizens to bear the brunt of conflicts. She emphasised the importance of leaders setting an example by working together.
Drawing parallels with previous reconciliations, Chege reminded Kenyans of the handshake between Raila Odinga and President Ruto, which eased political tensions.
She noted that refusing to cooperate with fellow leaders would only create unnecessary hostility, using her own relationship with MP Kathambi as an example of why leaders must maintain cordial ties for the greater good.
“Unajua hakuna haja watu wakuje wamuincite alafu jioni ikifika wanarudi Nairobi wakiacha nyinyi wawili mkipigana. Mimi nataka mkae pamoja. Mliona Baba na William Ruto walipatana wakasalimiana, sasa kama ningepigana na Kathambi siningebaki nikikaa mjinga sana,” she stated.
Chege concluded by commending Uhuru’s presence at State House, describing it as a sign of progress. She stressed that Kenya is one nation and underscored the need for unity among political leaders to ensure meaningful development across the country.
“Leo nimeona former president akiwa pale State House, nasi hio ndio maneno tunataka maendeleo kwa sababu Kenya ni moja,” she added.
Uhuru meets Ruto
This comes after President William Ruto hosted former President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi, on August 1, 2025, for a high-level diplomatic summit focused on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) peace process.
The meeting was part of a joint East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Co-Chairs’ summit, co-chaired by Ruto (EAC Chairman) and Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa (SADC Chairman). Kenyatta attended in his official capacity as a facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Process, aimed at resolving the conflict in eastern DRC.

The summit included distinguished African leaders such as Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo, Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde, and Botswana’s Mokgweetsi Masisi, focusing on harmonising regional peace efforts. Beyond the formal discussions, Ruto and Kenyatta shared a cordial moment, with Ruto giving Kenyatta a tour of State House to showcase ongoing renovations.
Photos and videos of their warm interaction, including a firm handshake and laughter, sparked public interest and mixed reactions among Kenyans, given their historically strained relationship since the 2022 election fallout. Ruto later described Kenyatta as his “old good friend” on social media, emphasising reconciliation and national cohesion.
The summit resulted in key resolutions, including the formation of a Joint Secretariat under the African Union Commission and a unified framework for peacebuilding in the DRC.
