Preparations are currently in top gear for the groundbreaking of the Mabera Affordable Housing Program to be presided over by President William Ruto tomorrow, Sunday, October 8, 2023.

In a press release sent to newsrooms, Housing Principal Secretary (PS) Charles Hinga noted that the project in Kuria West constituency will see the construction of 200 units under the Constituency Affordable Housing Program.

According to the PS, the houses which will be constructed on 2.5-acre land will constitute 40 one-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom units and 60 three-bedroom units.

“The Government has provided the parcel of land measuring 2.5 acres where the housing units will be constructed in two phases. The State Department for Housing and Urban Development has partnered with Top Choice Surveillance Ltd as the project developer,” the PS said.

The PS also stated that the project is set to be completed in 12 months and has been earmarked to be completed in October 2024. He expressed confidence that the project will create job opportunities directly and indirectly for people in the region.

“The affordable Housing program is not only providing decent and affordable to Kenyans in informal settlements but it is also providing employment for the millions of youths who are jobless.

“The affordable housing units will create approximately approximately 100 jobs directly and 600 jobs indirectly to the youth and women in construction from the region . The Contractor is also expected to expand the sewer and water infrastructure to cater for the increase in population,” the PS added.

Hinga also announced that the project developer will partner with local Jua Kali artisans for the supply of over 400 doors and windows estimated to cost Ksh5 million.

The latest comes as part of Ruto’s plans to construct 1,000,000 houses across the country by 2027. Currently, the Ruto-led administration is at an advanced stage of constructing 250,000 units across the country each year as part of the Kenya Kwanza Affordable Housing Project.

“The government is at an advanced stage of constructing at least 250,000 housing units every year, while Kuria West joins Bahati, Vihiga, and Gichugu constituencies with active affordable housing projects,” the PS added.
