President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to position the National Youth Service (NYS) as a premier hub for youth training, skills development, and national service.

Speaking on Thursday, August 28, 2025, during the Passing-Out Parade of newly trained NYS recruits at the NYS College in Gilgil, Nakuru County, the Head of State praised the institution for transforming young men and women into disciplined, patriotic, and skilled citizens ready to contribute to Kenya’s growth.

”We are undertaking far-reaching reforms to transform the National Youth Service (NYS) into a dynamic and productive institution; one that is truly fit for purpose, and capable of equipping our young people with market-relevant skills and qualifications that prepare them for the opportunities of the modern job market,” President Ruto said.

The parade marked the culmination of months of rigorous training in paramilitary drills, vocational skills, and life-skills development. Thousands of recruits graduated in the ceremony, which was graced by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, NYS Director General Matilda Sakwa, senior government officials, military commanders, and local leaders.

Inside plan to strengthen NYS

The President also announced the government’s plan to expand the NYS recruitment from the current 20 000 to 100,000 in a bid to benefit the youth.

”Through structured training with industry partners, NYS graduates will be able to advance into higher learning, join our disciplined services to defend peace and security, or venture into enterprise. To ensure more young Kenyans benefit, we are expanding recruitment into the NYS from the current 20,000 to 100,000 by the year 2028, the largest expansion in its history.” He added.

Ruto emphasised that strengthening NYS would anchor Kenya’s future on empowered and productive youth, ensuring that the country remains competitive in a fast-changing global economy. He added that his government will continue to invest in the institution’s capacity to provide training opportunities and expand its reach across all sectors.

The Head of State further noted that the NYS is uniquely positioned to unite the nation by bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds, fostering cohesion, and instilling a service-first mindset.
