President William Ruto has announced that his government is set to distribute 12.5 million bags of subsidised fertiliser to Kenyans in 2026.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the President emphasised that this move will double this year’s distribution, building on the success of 2025, when 7 million bags of subsidised fertiliser and 35 million kilos of certified seeds were delivered across all 1,450 wards in the country.

According to Ruto, since its launch at scale, the fertiliser subsidy programme has seen over 21 million bags of affordable fertiliser distributed, reducing prices by nearly two-thirds and saving farmers Ksh105 billion this year alone.

“We plan to distribute 12.5 million bags across all the 1450 wards, ensuring every farmer has access to affordable inputs,” Ruto said.

The President noted that the 2025 distribution has significantly boosted agricultural productivity nationwide, making inputs more accessible to farmers across the country.

The President highlighted that the results of these interventions are visible across both farms and markets. According to Ruto, national maize harvests have surged from 44 million bags in 2022 to 67 million bags in 2024, setting the stage for a record-breaking 70 million-bag harvest this year.

He added that the impact extends to household staples, with the price of a two-kilogram packet of flour falling from KSh 250 in 2022 to as low as KSh 130 today, providing relief to millions of Kenyan families.

President Ruto also noted the transformation of key agricultural value chains. He said that tea production has grown, with earnings rising from KSh 138 billion in 2022 to KSh 215 billion in 2024, representing a 56 per cent increase.

According to Ruto, the coffee sector, once on the brink of collapse, is experiencing a strong recovery, with nearly 50,000 seedlings distributed. He noted that earnings per kilo have increased from an average of Ksh70 to between Ksh120 and Ksh150.

Through these initiatives, Ruto affirmed that his government remains committed to supporting farmers, boosting food security, and ensuring that the benefits of agricultural growth reach households across Kenya.

The President concluded that these programmes are central to his vision of transforming agriculture and improving livelihoods nationwide.
