Nyandarua Senator and Democracy for the Citizen’s Party Secretary General designate John Methu has intensified the opposition’s attacks against President William Ruto, declaring that leaders from different regions are coordinating efforts to unseat him in the 2027 general election.

Speaking in an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, July 19, 2026, Methu used combative language to describe what he termed a nationwide campaign to remove Ruto from office, saying opposition leaders would mobilise support from every corner of the country.

“We have to hunt him down from all directions,” Methu said, referring to President Ruto. “We want the people of Western to unite and hunt him down from that side. Gachagua will be leading us from Mt Kenya, and Matiang’i will be uniting with the people from Gusii land. Sifuna and Natembeya will unite from the western, and they will hunt him from that direction,” Methu said.

The senator has added that the opposition’s ultimate objective is to ensure President Ruto is defeated at the ballot in the next presidential election.

“The first person to go home will be William Ruto,” Methu added.

Opposition’s regional strategy

According to the Nyandarua senator, the opposition intends to consolidate support across key voting blocs by assigning prominent leaders to spearhead mobilisation in their respective regions.

Methu said former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would lead the campaign in the Mt Kenya region, while former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i would rally support in the Gusii region.

He also named Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya as the leaders expected to mobilise voters in the Western Kenya region.

The senator’s remarks come amid the push for the opposition side to produce a single presidential flagbearer to face off against William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

The opposition leaders have stepped up criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration while holding rallies across the country aimed at consolidating support behind a united front against President Ruto.

The senator’s use of the phrase “hunt him down” appeared to be political rhetoric describing an effort to defeat the president through coordinated political mobilisation across different regions of the country.

The remarks add to increasingly charged political discourse as parties position themselves for the 2027 polls.
