President William Ruto today commenced his two-day development tour of Narok County with the official opening of the newly completed Suswa Modern Market.

The market, a part of the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) initiative, is set to accommodate over 200 traders and is one of seven modern markets being constructed across the country.

In a statement during the opening, President Ruto acknowledged the collaborative efforts between the national and county governments, emphasising the significant role such initiatives play in empowering local economies.

“This is a major milestone for the residents of Suswa, and indeed for all of Narok County. The completion of this modern market will not only boost trade but also create a conducive environment for business growth,” Ruto said.

The Suswa Market, now ready for use, was among the first to be completed, while other markets under the ESP initiative are still under construction at different stages. President Ruto also inspected the ongoing construction of the Ntulele Modern Market, which is on course for completion.

In addition to the market developments, Ruto made another significant announcement. He allocated an additional 6,000 acres of land from the Kedong Ranch to Narok residents, bringing the total land allocation to 10,000 acres. The president’s decision follows long-standing calls from the people of Narok for a share of the land.

A promise fulfilled

“I know the people of Narok have been asking for a share of the Kedong Ranch. Today, I am fulfilling that promise. I’ve added 6,000 acres using government funds. Bring me the names of the intended title deed holders, and I’ll have them signed within a week,” Ruto said.

This move is expected to ease land-related tensions and provide long-awaited land ownership opportunities for the residents of Narok County.

As part of his ongoing commitment to local development, Ruto reiterated the government’s focus on projects that benefit ordinary citizens. He called for more collaborative efforts between the national and county governments to ensure that development projects such as markets, roads, and land allocations continue to improve the livelihoods of Kenyans, especially in remote areas.

The President’s tour of Narok County is expected to continue for another day, with more activities and engagements with local leaders and residents scheduled.

About the development projects

The modern market initiative is part of a larger national effort to improve infrastructure and boost trade in Kenya’s rural areas. The ESP markets are designed to promote commerce, improve access to markets for local farmers, and provide business opportunities to the youth and women in rural communities.
