President William Ruto has expressed his sorrow following the death of High Court Judge David Amilcar Shikomera Majanja.

In a statement on Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Head of State noted he has been heavy of heart after learning of the distinguished High Court judge‘s demise.

“I have learnt with great sorrow about the death of the David A S Majanja, who was a judge of the High Court of Kenya, and a member of the Judicial Service Commission, which occurred earlier today,” Ruto’s statement read in part.

Ruto described the deceased as a brilliant lawyer who scaled up the ladder within the Judiciary after an exemplary spell at the Bar.

The President added that Judge Majanja inspired confidence in the legal profession and the corridors of justice. He noted that Majanja’s career had started to peak.

“The Majanja was a brilliant lawyer who joined the Bench after an exemplary spell at the Bar. His integrity and ability inspired the confidence of his colleagues, while his powerful intellect made him a trusted juridical voice. It has been evident for long that although fairly experienced, Majanja was at the beginning of a long and illustrious career, and this fact makes his passing all the more tragic,” Ruto stated.

“On behalf of the government, I extend condolences to Majanja’s family and friends and to the Judiciary. May Almighty God grant you the strength to bear this loss, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Gachagua’s message

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also mourned David Majanja as a judge with a brilliant mind.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing on of the High Court Judge, Justice Majanja. In his illustrious career, Justice Majanja was a prolific gifted mind that immensely contributed to redefining the legal profession and the justice system of our country in diverse ways.

“My deepest condolences to the family, friends, the learned friends fraternity and our Nation. We pray that the family finds solace in the Lord at this lowest moment, as they come to terms with this big loss. May the soul of Justice Majanja rest in eternal peace,” Gachagua said in a statement on X on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

Koome’s confirmation

In a statement on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Chief Justice Martha Koome expressed sadness on the passing of the High Court judge who also served as a Commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission.

The President of the Apex Court indicated that the Judiciary has been heartbroken by Majanja’s demise.

In her statement, CJ Koome further sent heartfelt condolences to the deceased family, friends and the entire Judiciary.

“We are all heartbroken,” CJ Koome stated.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary and JSC fraternity during this time of deep sorrow and sadness,” she added.

Majanja’s contribution

According to CJ Koome, the late Majanja will be remembered as a towering figure in the development of the transformative post-2010 jurisprudence.

Koome described Majanja as a crucial pillar in the institution-building of the JSC and the Judiciary.
