President William Ruto has criticized his opponents for nominating their family members to key positions.

Speaking during the Mo Ibrahim Governance conversation held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Saturday, April 29, 2023, Ruto, without mentioning names, said it was wrong for his competitors to use their positions to only uplift their family members and relatives.

He asserted that opportunity should be spread and as such leaders should consider uplifting those struggling most in the society.

“I have a very big argument with my competitors who use the offices they get to nominate their daughters and cousins.

“I don’t think that is the best way to use the opportunity. I think opportunity should be spread,” he said.

Ruto on sharing opportunities

He added: “If you have gotten an opportunity, reach out to somebody else to give them a lift or hand up so that they too can become something. It shouldn’t be just around your family.”

Ruto’s sentiments follow the nomination of Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, and Kalonzo Musyoka’s son, Kennedy Musyoka, to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Winnie was fronted by her father’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party while Kennedy was nominated to the regional assembly by his father’s Wiper Party.

Both were elected to the positions during the election which was held on Thursday, November 17, 2022.
