Rogue officer suspected to have shot dead colleagues in Kayole
A police officer based at Kayole station is suspected to have been involved in the shooting to death his colleagues and stealing their firearms in Saika, Kayole on November 8.
Preliminary investigations into the shooting, which were taken over by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, revealed that the officer attached to undercover patrols and other rogue officers were involved in criminal activities in the area.
Detectives said Constables Joel Chesire and Albert Abeere were on patrol in Mwenyenge area near the Saika-Dandora Bridge when they were shot dead and both their firearms stolen.
At least five police officers attached to Kayole Police Station have been arrested in the last two months on suspicion of being involved in robbery with violence.
The DCI has enhanced operations leading to the arrest of over 10 security officers in the last one month. Among the latest arrests involve Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) officers who have been arrested for various criminal and corrupt activities.
Sources say cases where some officers, especially from the elite units were involved in criminal activities prompted the disbandment of the Flying Squad and the restructuring of the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU).
Criminal activities
The Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo on Wednesday revealed that more officers were getting involved in criminal activities and attributed this to lack of supervision by the senior officers.
“This is a clear manifestation of lack of supervision from the basic level of corporals to higher levels of duty officers, security officers and officers-in-charge,” Ogallo said.
He directed that all officers be supervised and oversighted by their seniors during and after deployment to prevent such cases, which he said were portraying the service in bad light.
“Besides the acts and omissions being criminal in nature they are also giving the service a bad image. This cannot be entertained any longer,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the killing of businessman Jackson Kyalo Mbithi still in Nairobi.
The deceased was on Wednesday night shot three times by unknown men in Industrial Area when he and his wife were closing their shop. Nothing was stolen from him.
Policing areas
During the pass-out parade of 1,224 officers at Kiganjo last month, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said officers will be trained on different policing areas.
“Effective early 2020 the National Police Service will commence eight months special training for officers aimed at placing them in specialised units based on their areas of study,” Matiang’i said.
