Raila Odinga’s body lands in Kisumu International Airport aboard ‘Enigma01C’
The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has landed at Kisumu International Airport aboard a military jet designated ‘Enigma01C’ on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
The aircraft touched down carrying the remains of the veteran opposition leader, who died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in India. This arrival marks one of the final legs of a national farewell as the country prepares to lay to rest one of its most influential political figures.
Upon arrival at Kisumu International Airport, the remains of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were received with a ceremonial water cannon salute. The gesture formed part of the military honors organized in line with President William Ruto’s directive, issued during his official announcement of Odinga’s passing.
Journey from India to Kenya
Raila’s journey home began earlier in the week when his body was repatriated from India. On Thursday, October 16, 2025, a Kenya Airways flight that transported the casket from Kochi was symbolically renamed RAO001 as it entered Kenyan airspace. Thousands of Kenyans followed the flight live on Flightradar24, a gesture that reflected the deep national sentiment.
The plane was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, and senior government officials. The event underscored the national importance of Raila’s return and the unity displayed in mourning his passing.

Public viewing at Mamboleo
Upon arrival in Kisumu, Raila’s casket was received under full military honours. The Kenya Defence Forces coordinated with local leaders and national security agencies to ensure a dignified and orderly reception. Members of the public had been urged to be seated by 7:00 a.m. at Mamboleo Grounds, where the body will lie in state for viewing.
The public viewing is expected to attract thousands of mourners from Kisumu, the wider Nyanza region, and across the country. Authorities anticipate one of the largest gatherings in the city’s history, reflecting the late leader’s lasting connection to the community and his role in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey.
Final journey to Bondo
Later today, the casket, draped in the national flag, will be transported by road to Raila’s ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, under state escort. The burial is scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, where he will be laid to rest alongside his parents, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Juma Odinga.
Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga clarified the burial site, dismissing speculation and confirming that Raila had wished to be interred at the family compound. The funeral is expected to draw thousands of mourners and leaders, with Kenya Airways already increasing flights to Kisumu to accommodate the high number of people travelling to pay their last respects.
