Police officer shot in Thika dies

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai, who was shot and killed in the line of duty at the Cravers area in Thika Town, Kiambu County, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to a statement released on Thursday, 19th June 2025, by the Office of the Inspector General, the officer was fatally shot by a criminal and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His next of kin have since been informed.
Police Constable Koome was on duty when he confronted a motorcycle rider. A brief altercation ensued, during which the assailant allegedly opened fire, shooting the officer in the neck. Despite being rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital, Koome succumbed to his injuries.
Manhunt underway
“Following this tragic incident, police officers responded immediately and, working in collaboration with members of the public, launched an investigation,” read the statement by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

The person of interest fled the scene, and a manhunt is currently underway. The NPS said it is following crucial leads to ensure the suspect is arrested and prosecuted.
Call for public cooperation
The police service extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the slain officer and thanked members of the public for their support. They also appealed for any additional information to aid in the investigation.
“We appeal to anyone with further details to contact the nearest police station,” the statement added.
The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to protect lives and property across Kenya and pledged to continue dismantling criminal networks to ensure national security.
