The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of two persons of interest believed to be involved in a spate of highway robberies along the Eldoret–Malaba highway.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, November 9, 2025, the DCI said the arrest of the two followed a crackdown on the Eldoret-Malava highway. “A crackdown on highway robbers along the Eldoret–Malaba highway has landed two suspects in police custody, following a stealthy operation by officers from Matete and Webuye Police Stations.”

The arrested persons are linked to be among part of a gang that has been targeting motorists during late-night ambushes, leaving travellers traumatised and property lost. “The duo, William Simiyu and Byron Werunga, are believed to be part of a ruthless gang that has been preying on innocent motorists in a series of late-night ambushes that left travellers terrified and property lost,” the DCI added.

Following days of discreet surveillance, detectives moved in to apprehend the suspects before they could carry out further attacks. Upon questioning, the suspects revealed the locations of their hideouts along River Nzoia and Nabuyola Village, where police recovered a cache of stolen goods.

“Upon interrogation, the pair led officers to their hideouts along River Nzoia and Nabuyola Village, where a cache of stolen goods was recovered,” the DCI statement read.

Recovered items include three 6kg gas cylinders, assorted electronics, and vehicle batteries, all believed to have been looted from travellers along the busy highway. The operation marks a significant step in the fight against highway crime in the region.
