Peter Munya dedicates Mashujaa Day to Raila’s selfless legacy
Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, dedicating this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations to the former prime minister’s life and legacy.
“This Mashujaa Day 2025 is dedicated to the selfless and resilient life of Baba H.E. Raila Odinga. Forever honoured,” Munya wrote, in a message posted on his Facebook account on October 20, 2025.

The tribute came just a day after Raila was laid to rest at his family home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, in a private ceremony attended by President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, few other leaders, and close family members.
Munya’s message reflected his long and complicated political relationship with Raila. Though the two leaders have had differences over the years, Munya has often expressed admiration for Raila’s role in Kenya’s democracy.

Munya’s past support for Raila
During Raila’s 2022 presidential bid, Munya, then serving as Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, joined then Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi in publicly endorsing Raila under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

At the time, Munya urged residents of Meru to rally behind Raila, saying he was the right leader to continue Kenya’s reform agenda.
“Baba has fought for democracy for many years. His time to lead the country has come,” Munya told supporters during Raila’s campaign rally in Tigania West.
His support was not just regional. In December 2021, Munya read the resolutions of the Mount Kenya Foundation, which endorsed Raila as their preferred presidential candidate. Surrounded by top business and political leaders, he described Raila as a man who had defended the rights of Kenyans and deserved to be supported by all communities.
Munya, who is expected to make another run for the Meru governorship in 2027, has consistently acknowledged Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s political journey. By dedicating Mashujaa Day to Raila, he joined other leaders and citizens across the country in honouring the late Premier’s enduring legacy.
