Nairobi City County Woman Representative Esther Passaris has called for a collective effort to reduce the increased road accidents as the festive season kicks in.

Taking to her official X account on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Passaris called for caution from road users to safeguard lives while travelling.

”Every single day, we have road accidents. It is time we accept it is a collective responsibility. How do you carry passengers who trust you and pay you to get them safely from point A to point B, yet you drive an unserviced vehicle, ignore traffic rules, or gamble with lives on the road? What should have been a simple trip home turns into chaos, injuries, hospital bills, and broken families,” Passaris said.

Waruku accident

Her sentiments come at a time when a family in Murang’a County lost 14 family members on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway in a grisly accident in September 2025. Also, Esther Passaris speaks after several people were reported injured when a Nairobi PSV plunged into a river in the Waruku area on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least 30 passengers were injured in the particular accident that happened along the road leading to Gatina in Dagoretti North Constituency, Nairobi.

”Everyone who enters a car wants to arrive alive. Drivers must take responsibility. But so should passengers. When you see a bus speeding, overtaking dangerously, or breaking rules, and you sit quietly, tomorrow, that silence could cost lives, including yours.

“Cars were not meant to kill people; they were meant to transport them. Something has to change. As we pray for those injured in the Waruku bus accident and hope for their recovery, let’s reflect: When you get behind the wheel or even as a passenger, will your choices help everyone arrive alive? If not, it’s time to change,” Passaris added.

Meanwhile, emergency response teams nearby swung into action to assist the victims. Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi confirmed the rescue efforts before calling for calm amid investigations.

“I’m deeply saddened by the unfortunate accident that occurred this evening at Waruku, on the road leading to Gatina, involving a bus. The hard-working parents left home this morning to seek their families’ daily bread but will, sadly, not get home,” she said in a statement on Facebook.
