Teachers of Bumala B Secondary School in Busia county were on Monday night attacked by students and parents over poor results.

The angry parents and students stormed the staff quarters in the morning and started throwing stones.

They claimed that the school had performed dismally in the just released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam where no student had qualified to join university.

The leading student in the school had a C- (minus), with several scoring grade Es.

The parents also blocked the teachers’ houses with huge twigs so that they could not come out.

Speaking to press, the worried teachers said the parents had promised to burn them in their houses for failing their children.

“It was Monday early in the morning when parents together with students came to our houses and started throwing stones at us and blocking our doors with twigs,” a terrified teacher narrated.

She said they had promised to come back today to teach them a lesson.

The teachers who had already reported the incident to Butula Police station, asked the Teachers Service Commission to come to their rescue.

They said the poor results were for student’s who were not attending classes. “Parents supported the absenteeism without proper reasons and now they are blaming us,” the teachers lamented.

The teachers said even their children were terrified following the Monday incident.

Kenya Union of Post Education Teachers Busia branch executive secretary Moffat Okisai criticised parent’s for attacking teachers.

He said it was a collective responsibility to post presentable results and blamed parents for pointing a finger at the teachers only.

Okisai said many factors had contributed to poor results and singled out pregnancy and absenteeism.

He said TSC should transfer all the teachers as was the case with Isongo secondary in Kakamega county last year.
