Siaya Governor James Orengo has visited the family of Rex Maasai in Machakos County, renewing calls for justice nearly two years after the young protester was shot dead during the June 2024 demonstrations.

Taking to his official X account on Friday, May 22, 2026, Orengo said the emotional visit brought renewed attention to unresolved cases linked to protest-related deaths, with him assuring the family that efforts to seek accountability will continue until justice is achieved.

During the visit, Orengo stood in solidarity with the grieving family at their home, where he was received by relatives who have spent months and years demanding answers over Rex Maasai’s death.

“Today, I stood in solidarity with the family of Rex Maasai at their home in Machakos County. Nearly two years after Rex was tragically shot down during the June 2024 protests, his family’s cry for justice remains unanswered. We refuse to let his sacrifice fade into obscurity,” Orengo stated.

“Joining us was the mother of Erickson Kyalo, the 25-year-old patriot fatally shot in the head by security forces outside Parliament during the anti Finance Bill demonstrations on June 25, 2024. Unarmed and wearing white overalls, Erickson’s final moments were captured dancing in peaceful defiance before his life was brutally cut short.”

Rex Maasai was shot during the June 2024 protests, an incident that has since become a symbol of contested policing and accountability during public demonstrations.

Orengo said the family’s pain reflects a wider national concern over justice for victims of protest-related violence.

Renewed calls for accountability

The veteran politician used the visit to renew calls for thorough investigations and accountability over the circumstances surrounding Maasai’s death.

He emphasised that no Kenyan family should be left without answers when a loved one dies under such circumstances, particularly in events involving public protests and security operations.

Orengo’s remarks come amid continued public debate over police conduct during demonstrations and the handling of past protest-related fatalities.

Broader concerns over protest deaths

The visit also highlighted ongoing concerns from human rights groups and political leaders regarding excessive use of force during past protests, including the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

Families of victims have repeatedly called for investigations, prosecution of those responsible, and compensation for affected households.

Orengo assured the family that their struggle for justice is not forgotten and vowed continued engagement with relevant institutions to push for answers.
