Witness in Rex Masai murder case reveals struggles he underwent trying to save his life
A crucial witness in the Rex Masai inquest, George Ndikas, has told the court that his friend was pronounced dead at the hospital moments after they forced themselves in.
Ndikas, who appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo on Monday, March 30, 2026, said that by the time they got to the hospital, the gate had been locked.
The witness narrated to court how they had to break into the hospital for his friend, whose left thigh was soaked in blood, to be attended to.
Upon accessing the hospital, they were instructed to take him to a certain room and wait for a doctor who was coming to attend to him.
Ndikas testified that after the doctor came, he checked on Rex and told them that he was already dead.
“Venye tulifika, gate ilikuwa imefungwa but tukaibreak in tukamwingisha Rex ndani aladu tukaelekezwa mahali tutampeleka tungoje dakatari. The dakatari came and told us he is not alive,” Ndikas told the court.
Ndikas said he could not comprehend the heart-breaking news, and he called his sister and Rex Masai’s mother to break the sad news.
He told the court that it then took around two hours for the deceased to be transferred to the mortuary.
Notably, he narrated the difficulties he experienced before getting Rex to the hospital, stating that the taxi drivers and police officers did not offer help despite the deceased bleeding so much.
“Askari niliwauliza wanisaidie wakakataa, then one guy akakuja akaniskiza akaniuliza ni nini mbaya. Nikamwambia ndugu yangu ako hivi and nimekosa usaidizi. Akaita majamaa wengine tukabeba Rex to the hospital,” Ndikas testified.
Ndikas also told the court that he has been avoiding testifying despite him being a crucial witness for fear of his life.
However, he told the court that he was not threatened, so his fear was just because he had trauma.
“I have been traumatised too, so I wanted to heal first before coming to testify,” Ndika told the court.
Among the remaining witnesses is Doctor Lawrence Machira, who is described as the last medical professional who attended to Rex when he was taken to the hospital after he was shot.
The matter proceeds on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 2 pm, where the National Police Service (NPS) lawyer is expected to cross-examine Ndikas, and two more witnesses are expected to testify.
