Omogeni faults Ruto for overseeing Kenya’s decline in foreign policy

By , November 26, 2025

Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni has decried Kenya’s plummeting standards of foreign policy under President William Ruto.

Speaking to a local TV on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Omogeni bemoaned Ruto’s high-handedness and the high government officials in government at the centre of the lack of a proper foreign strategy and the blustering approach to foreign relations.

One-man show president

“Kenya’s foreign policy is on a free fall. We have lost our standing as an island of peace within a perilous neighborhood. What we have is a one-man show in President Ruto, who does not pay attention to any advice of professionals,” he stated.

According to the senator, high-level individuals in government have been cutting deals for their own personal enrichment with regional countries to the detriment of the country’s image.

“All these deals you hear about neighbouring countries and our decisions as a country are all tied to some business interests or connections of personal benefit and enrichment of the individuals in government,” he added.

In a direct challenge to the president, the firebrand senator called on the president to get his act together and save the country’s reputation in the foreigners’ eyes from further slackening.

“Ruto has not listened to anybody. It all goes back to him, and we are not saying this because we are politicians; unless he gets it right, he will leave this country in a worse place. That is the brutal reality, which should be a wake-up call for him,” he posited.

His remarks come amid a concern about the government’s reluctant response to addressing the plight of citizens in foreign lands and its handling and intervention in the recent case where two human rights and political activists were detained in Uganda.

The plight of Nelson Oyoo and Bob Njagi, who got released after enduring 38 days of military detention in Uganda, attracted the ire of Kenyans.

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi criticised Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi over the abduction of Kenyan activists.

Speaking on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Havi opined on how the ministry failed in protecting Kenyans, reminding Mudavadi that citizenship is not a privilege granted at will, but it is a constitutional right by birth.

“The cabinet secretary for foreign affairs should understand that the right to be a Kenyan is given by birth and constitution, and it’s not a favour. He has overstayed his work,” Havi said.
