A multi-agency team yesterday netted illicit liquor packaged as genuine brands of established firms, valued at millions of shillings, from a distiller near the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi.

Thousands of litres of liquor were impounded, all lacking Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) stamps.

The alcoholic drinks were seized at a go-down within a business park, ready for distribution to Ruiru, Eastern Bypass, Thika and Witeithie.

The officers were from Kenya Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and KRA. The liquor has an estimated value of Sh100 million.

Led by DCI’s Economic Crimes Unit boss Abdullahi Shurie (above), the team carted away the liquor and distilling equipment in two lorries. The owner of the premises was not around.

“We are in hot pursuit of the person behind the illegal distillery whose whereabouts we still don’t know. We are trying to chase tax evaders to ensure they follow the law by paying tax and have with them the requisite business operating documents,” said Shurie.

Sources say KRA could be losing millions of shillings daily in revenue to unscrupulous traders.
