ODM leaders plead with Ruto over harassment of Kenyan fishermen on Lake Victoria
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader, Oburu Oginga, has implored President William Ruto to engage the auspices of his office and address the harassment from neighbouring nations.
Speaking in Migori County during the Piny Luo Festival on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Oburu expressed concerns over the plight of being arrested while operating near contested waters.
“We need to step up our diplomatic efforts so that the people of Tanzania stop harassing and arresting our people. This water belongs to us all, and we need to all enjoy it in peace,” he stated.
“Our people are dying in this lake, and some are being forcefully arrested and taken to Tanzania. We demand security for our fishermen, and as we welcome you here, we ask that you look into this issue,” he added.

The sentiments were also echoed by Siaya Senator James Orengo, who urged Ruto to equally address cases of confiscation of fishing gear and extortion from Ugandan authorities and fishermen.
Migingo Island
“Migingo is just near here, from where we are, and we have Ugandans who come all the way and disturb our fishermen here. We ask that you intervene on the matter,” he stated.
In response, Ruto heeded the calls as he assured his government’s commitment to ensure the region’s fishermen are addressed.

“I have heard the cries. Migingo is part of Kenya. We will engage all the diplomatic avenues and other means available to ensure our people are not harassed and conduct their activities in peace,” he said.
The president also continued in his trend of promises to the residents following his trip to Turkana, as he promised the Muhuru Bay residents a new fish landing site, similar to the one in Got Achola in Sori Bay.
He also promised to revamp the area’s infrastructure and electricity projects.
