ODM gives Kasipul and Ugunja candidate certificates after chaotic nominations
By Mabonga Makhanu, September 30, 2025ODM has issued nomination certificates to Ugunja and Kasipul aspirants who participated in the party primaries held on September 13, 2025.
During the handover ceremony on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee, led by Emily Awita, oversaw the exercise. Certificates were presented to Kasipul and Ugunja aspirants, alongside MCA candidates for Kariobangi North, Narok Town, Nyasiengo, and Nyamaiya wards.
The event marked a significant milestone for the party, coming after similar certificates had earlier been issued to the Magarini parliamentary aspirant and MCA candidates in Kisia East and other wards.
“Today we are here to hand over nomination certificates to Kasipul and Ugunja aspirants, as well as MCA seats for Kariobangi North, Narok Town, Nyasiengo, and Nyamaiya wards. Today marks a significant milestone in our party’s journey as we gather to issue nomination certificates to our winners. We celebrate the democratic spirit that defines us. On September 13, 2025, we also issued nomination certificates to the MP aspirant in Magarini and MCA seats in Kisia East, among others,” Awiti stated
Awiti stated that following the recent primaries, two petitions were lodged: one for Kasipul and another for Alexon Ward. The Kasipul case was dismissed by the party’s Internal Conflict Resolution Committee, and the results were upheld. The Alexon petition is still under review, and the nomination certificate will be issued to the winner before October 2, 2025.
“Following recent primaries, there were two petitions logged, one for Kasipul and the other for Alexon Ward. The Kasipul case was dispersed by the party’s internal conflict resolution committee, and the results were upheld. As for Alexon, the petition is being addressed; once done, the certificate will be issued to the winner before October 2, 2025,” Awiti stated.
Nomination certificate issuance ceremony
The nomination certificate issuing ceremony was attended by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and other top officials within the party.
These come after the recently concluded ODM party primaries in Kasipul Kabondo, which saw the son of the late Ongond’o Were, Boyd Were, declared the winner.
Boyd is now set to face Philip Aroko, among other candidates who will be participating in the by-election.

Recently, Aroko urged defeated ODM aspirants to throw their weight behind his candidature and defeat the party’s flag bearer.
Party primaries in Kasipul and Ugunja were marred by incidents of violence. In Kasipul, several vehicles were destroyed as goons attempted to invade a polling station.
Similar incidents were witnessed in Ugunja, where some people sustained injuries.
