Oburu pens a heartfelt message on Raila’s 81st posthumous birthday
By Mabonga Makhanu, January 7, 2026Recently installed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has paid tribute to his late brother, Raila Odinga, on what would have been his birthday.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, Oburu Odinga reflected on the deep bond he shared with his brother. He described the challenge of coming to terms with Raila Odinga’s passing, noting that they grew up like twins, sharing life experiences, laughter, and mutual understanding.
Despite his brother’s death, Oburu Odinga emphasised that Raila’s memory remains alive in his heart.

“It has been incredibly difficult coming to terms with your loss. We grew up as twins, sharing so much of life, laughter, and understanding. Today, it feels unreal to speak of you in the past tense, to call you the late Raila,” Oburu Odinga stated.
Oburu Odinga also remembered his brother’s immense contribution to the country as a prominent statesman and highlighted the close personal relationship they maintained. He marked the occasion as Raila Odinga’s 80th birthday and beyond.

“I fondly remember your immense contribution to our great country as a foremost statesman, as well as the deep conversations and bond we shared. You were more than a sibling; you were my best friend. I miss you dearly, yet in my heart, you remain alive. Happy 80 + 1 heavenly birthday,” he added
Raila Odinga Junior, son of the late leader and recently installed head of the Odinga family, also shared a birthday message honouring his father
Several leaders have also come out to mourn the late leader, including Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, who has come out to lead the coastal delegation in commemorating the birthday of the late Raila Odinga.
Raila’s demise
This commemoration comes months after Raila Odinga died in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment. His passing brought the entire nation to a standstill, leaving many Kenyans mourning the loss of one of the country’s most influential leaders.

Despite his death, Raila Odinga continues to be celebrated. This is evident in the ongoing visits to Kango Ka Jaromogi, where people from all walks of life continue to pay tribute at his grave, honouring his enduring legacy.
