CS Joho to lead Coast region in commemorating Raila’s birthday
Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho is set to lead the coastal region in commemorating the birthday of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a statement, the cabinet secretary announced that the Coast would come together under the banner ‘The Coastal Salute’ to honour the legacy of the departed statesman on Wednesday, January 7, 2025.
The event marks what would have been Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday, celebrated as 80+1, a symbolic reminder of his enduring influence beyond the grave.
Joho noted that Raila Odinga’s life was defined by resilience, purpose, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of justice, democracy, and good governance.
He emphasised that the late leader’s journey demonstrated that true strength lies not in the absence of hardship, but in the courage to confront adversity with resolve and vision.
According to Joho, Raila’s vision did not end with his death. Instead, it took root in the minds and hearts of those he mentored and inspired over decades of public service. His ideals, Joho stated, continue to live on through the people who embraced his teachings, ensuring that his philosophy of leadership remains alive in the country’s political and social fabric.

“This Wednesday, we will be coming together to honour and celebrate Baba Rt Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga at 80+1. His journey teaches us that resilience is not the absence of struggle but the courage to walk through it with purpose. His vision did not end with him; it took root in the minds and hearts of those he mentored.” Joho stated
Joho further observed that Raila Odinga’s legacy serves as a reminder that leadership is not measured by the number of years one lives but by the generations one awakens and empowers. His influence, he said, continues to shape national discourse and inspire leaders across the political divide.
Raila’s death
The celebration comes four months after the death of Raila Odinga, who passed away while receiving medical treatment in India at the age of 80. His death sent shockwaves across the country, plunging the nation into mourning and leaving many Kenyans uncertain about how to move forward without one of the most influential figures in the country’s history.

Despite his passing, Raila Odinga’s name, ideals, and contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey remain deeply etched in the nation’s consciousness. Even in death, the late leader continues to be celebrated and honoured, as evidenced in Kang’o ka Jaramogi visits, a testament to the lasting impact he had on Kenya and its people.
