Nyayo House anti-corruption crackdown nets two
By Zadock.Aangira, August 31, 2023Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives have launched an operation to arrest brokers who take solicit bribes for free services.
The operation at Nyayo House, Nairobi, where the Directorate of Immigration is domiciled, has so far netted four suspects who will be charged in court with preparation to commit a felony and conspiracy to defraud wananchi.
The suspects (names withheld) have been detained at Central Police Station.
“The objective of the operation was to arrest brokers who take advantage of members of the public and solicit bribes for otherwise free services. This has contributed to a public outcry and a perception of inefficiency and corruption in service delivery,” Interior ministry officials said.
They have been processed and their phones confiscated and submitted for analysis to support further investigations with a view of presenting them in court. Such operations will be conducted regularly,” the official added.
On August 24, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki vowed to dismantle the cartels and attributed delays in processing of passports to massive corruption at Nyayo House.
The CS, while appearing before the Regional Integration Committee at Parliament Buildings, admitted that corrupt officials at the Directorate of Immigration were taking bribes for government services offered at no cost.
“I have received credible intelligence that could suggest that part of our problem in the processing of passports is a corruption problem,” the CS told the committee members.
