NTSA launches investigations after Webuye-Kitale Road accident leaves 15 dead

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a tragic road crash at Malaha near Lugulu town along the Webuye–Kitale Road on Monday night, March 9, 2026.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the tragedy unfolded at Malaha, near Lugulu town, when two motorcycle riders travelling in opposite directions collided head-on.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm a fatal road crash incident that occurred on Monday evening, 09th March, 2026 at Malaha, near Lugulu town, along the Webuye–Kitale Road,” NTSA wrote on its X account on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Casualty Report

Preliminary reports confirm that both riders died instantly at the scene. The report indicated that a trailer was travelling from the Kitale direction toward Webuye and lost control upon reaching the initial crash site.

The heavy vehicle ploughed into members of the public who had gathered at the scene to assist with rescue efforts for the motorcyclists.

“Preliminary reports indicate that two (2) motorcycle riders travelling in opposite directions collided, resulting in both riders dying on the spot. Tragically, a trailer from Kitale direction towards Webuye lost control upon reaching the scene of the accident, rammed into members of the public who had gathered to assist with rescue efforts.,” NTSA stated.

The report adds, “As a result of the incident, fifteen (15) people have been confirmed dead, eighteen (18) sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Webuye District Hospital, while three (3) have been treated and discharged.”

Investigations

NTSA expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the accident and wished those injured a quick recovery.

The authority confirmed that its officers had been dispatched to the scene, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

NTSA urged drivers to exercise utmost caution, reduce speed, and remain vigilant, especially when approaching densely populated areas.

“The Authority extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident. We also wish those who were injured a quick recovery. Our teams have been dispatched to the scene, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing,” NTSA said.

The authority called upon members of the public and first responders at crash scenes to exercise extreme caution to prevent further loss of life.
