Neck-to-neck rivalry as Kenya, Uganda jostle for T20 women cricket title
The battle for the top spot in the ongoing Kenya Quadrangular Women’s T20 Series has shifted with the advantage going to Uganda after the home team lost by six wickets yesterday to their rivals at the Nairobi Gymkhana in game 6.
Kenya had won the toss selecting to bat and ended the first innings with a score total of 107 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Kenya’s top score was Mary Mwangi’s 31 runs off 38 balls with her contribution including four boundaries. The home team’s numbers game seemed neutralised due to the unavailability of Captain Queentor Ooko.
Veronica Abuga’s 26 runs off 21 balls was the second-highest scorer for Team Kenya whose batting partnerships did not yield as many runs to be secure.
Doing the damage
Uganda’s bowling was tight and reduced a lot of runs from Kenya with the trio of Evelyn Anyipo, Concy Aweko and Janet Mbabazi doing the damage.
In reply, table leaders Uganda saved 22 balls as they scored 112 runs for the loss of three wickets.
Four boundaries
Captain Prosscovia Alako (38 runs off 31 balls) emerged as the top scorer with her numbers contribution including four boundaries and a double-six.
However, Kenya’s Flavia Odhiambo had a three-wicket haul inside four overs to attempt to keep the Kenyan batters in check.
This move was not enough as the fifth wicket stand pairing of Stephanie Nampiina and Rita Musamali put together an incredible 50 runs including four boundaries and a pair of sixes to set the Ugandans on the go.
In this series, it is 1-1 for Uganda vs Kenya in the head-to-head meetings with the next run of matches being significant for both sides to determine the ultimate winner of the inaugural tournament.
Tanzania today will be seeking to get revenge against Kenya after the Qatar vs Uganda match.
