Namibia’s vice president opens art exhibition on history
By People Daily, March 9, 2020Namibia’s Vice President Nangolo Mbumba officially launched a group exhibition on 30 years of independence by local artists, titled “Reflect,” on Thursday evening at the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN).
The exhibition is also scheduled to open at the Museum of African Art (MAA) in Belgrade, Serbia in April.
The exhibition is a result of a call to artists to give an artistic view on pre and post-independent Namibia, the future of Namibian Art and the nation at large, the artist’s role in society, and a reflection on the past 30 years.
Mbumba after touring the exhibition said the artwork presented a message of hope and commended all the artists who took part since the industry was often neglected.
“The artwork here is a considered, insightful collection that provides the much-needed narrative by Namibians for Namibians as well as for the world,” he said.
According to Mbumba, artists play a pivotal role in the documentation and reflection of past, present, and future and with the right input, their artwork can contribute to the country’s GDP and become life-changing.
