Museveni steps up campaigns ahead of Uganda’s elections
Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has stepped up his campaign for reelection across Uganda, days after rumuors about his health surfaced online.
In a statement on his X page on Monday, October 20, 2025, the 81-year-old president took his National Resistance Movement (NRM) campaigns to West Nile.
Museveni, 81, came to power in 1986. He is seeking another term in office, ahead of the next general election set for January 2026.
West Nile tour
“I thank the people of Adjumani for the warm welcome. As I conclude engaging our people in West Nile, I submit that there’s no question or fear of contradiction on these facts. I thank the people of Pakwach, Nebbi, Zombo, Obongi, Madi-Okollo, Arua, Koboko, Yumbe, Moyo, Terego, Maracha, and Adjumani for the warmth and support. Continue supporting NRM, and we shall do even more. Manzora,” he stated.
This comes after photos of the president made rounds on social networks with reports indicating that he had been taken ill and hospitalised in Uganda. However, the reports appeared to be a case of misinformation, targeting the veteran president.
The Ugandan leader was among the heads of state who failed to attend Raila Odinga’s burial on Sunday, alongside her Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan
He, however, sent a delegation to mourn the departed Prime Minister led by Ruhakana Rugunda, the former Prime Minister and Special Envoy, and John Mulimba, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Cooperation.
Mourning Raila
In his condolence message, he described the politician as a distinguished statesman whose leadership and vision inspired generations across Africa.
He added that Raila was a friend, with whom he worked closely over the last 30 years, adding that his nation stood in solidarity with Kenya at the time of mourning.
Museveni is set to face off against Ugandan pop star Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, in the 2026 presidential election, set for January.
He will be seeking to extend his term to 2031.
