Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into allegations of violence and disruption witnessed during the recently concluded Ol Kalou by-election.

Speaking on Sunday, July 19, 2026, in Trans Nzoia County, Murkomen said a case file has already been opened, and investigations are underway.

Murkomen said all individuals linked to the reported incidents would be summoned to record statements.

“I want to tell the nation that the DCI has already opened a file, investigation is ongoing, persons will be summoned. When files are ready, they will be presented to the DPP for prosecution,” he said.

Residents’ cooperation with officers

The CS noted that once investigations are complete, the case files will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate legal action.

Murkomen also appealed to Kenyans with information about the alleged incidents to cooperate with investigators by recording formal statements with the DCI.

“As it stands now, all Kenyans who have complaints, who witnessed any of those acts, beyond just seeing them on camera, it’s important to have proper witnesses record a statement with DCI so that proper action is taken to make sure that this nation is safe,” he said.

Gachagua accuses Murkomen of insecurity

The update comes days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua criticised Murkomen over his response to the violence that rocked the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, accusing him of misleading Kenyans and shielding those behind the attacks.

In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, July 18, 2026, Gachagua claimed Murkomen was downplaying what happened during the mini-poll despite widespread reports of violence that left one person dead and at least 20 others injured.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader accused the Interior CS of dismissing serious claims instead of holding those responsible to account.

“Bwana CS for Goonism, Kenyans are not fools,” Gachagua said.

He claimed hooded men, whom he described as rogue police officers and goons, attacked voters in broad daylight while uniformed officers allegedly failed to intervene.

“Police officers, the residents of Nyandarua, as well as journalists who were attacked, are horrified to hear the juvenile CS… telling Kenyans yesterday that Ol Kalou was very peaceful,” Gachagua said.
