Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said those funding goonism will soon face the law, insisting their days are numbered.

Speaking to a local TV station on Tuesday, December 3, 2025, Murkomen said the government would not shield rogue police officers or politicians found enabling criminal gangs across the country.

He described the situation as a growing security concern, noting that recent by elections had exposed worrying ties between officers and machete wielding groups.

Murkomen said Inspector General Douglas Kanja had already initiated processes to hold all culpable officers accountable.

The CS said the spread of gangs is being fuelled by individuals on both sides of the political divide.

“There are people who support the government, but they invest in gangs. We cannot condone this issue and we cannot protect them simply because they are supporting or opposing the president,” he said.

Murkomen warned rogue networks that their activities will soon be dismantled.

He said gangs had evolved into mercenary style outfits, working for the highest bidder rather than holding any political loyalty.

“These gangs survive by being contracted by unscrupulous business people to take people’s land. They are being co opted by politicians to provide services and they are not loyal to anybody,” he explained.

He revealed that the state is preparing a major intelligence led operation that will target gang financiers and leaders.

Murkomen on boda boda sector

According to him, the Inspector General is already formulating a strategy to ensure the operation is effective and far reaching.

The CS said the Jukwaa la Usalama platform is guiding how communities interact with security officers.

He explained that the model focuses on listening to citizens and identifying threats early, rather than responding only after crimes have happened.

The crackdown on boda boda crime is also part of the wider plan.

Murkomen said gangs have been misusing the sector to commit robberies and attacks.

“In the report we have singled out misuse of the boda boda sector in terms of committing crimes, including gangs,” he noted.

He said the state will work with the Ministry of Transport and NTSA to ensure boda boda operators are officially kitted and organised into cooperatives.

“All operators must be accountable. They must be identifiable,” he said.

Murkomen insisted that the work ahead will be difficult but necessary.

He added that the government remains committed to eliminating gang influence from communities.
