Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vouched for the welfare of chiefs and other local administrators to be considered and reviewed by President William Ruto.

While speaking at the State House during the Jukwa Usalama report on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Murkomen stated that for years, local administrators have endured difficult working conditions, with their welfare largely ignored.

He pleaded with the president to consider the chiefs for promotion, saying that they have served for many years without advancement. Murkomen added that promotions would be effective only if the officers were trained in a career progression programme, and now that they have been trained, he urged the President to promote them.

He pleaded with the president to consider the chiefs for promotion, saying that they have served for many years without advancement. Murkomen added that promotions would be effective only if the officers were trained in a career progression programme, and now that they have been trained, he urged the President to promote them.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary continued advocating for the administrators, urging the President to help materialise their desire to have the authority to incur expenses. He noted that a budget is allocated to the National Government Administrators (NGAO) officers for their daily running of errands, but it has been reduced year after year. He called on the president to reinstate the funds to help them operate effectively.

“There is also a small matter, Mr President: the authority to incur expenses. There is something that the chiefs are given when they go for a raid; each year it has being reduced.”

Murkomen also urged the president to look into the work injury benefits allocated to them as frontline officers handling security issues. He said that the administrators often face physical assault while performing their duties, are sometimes taken to court, and should be properly compensated for such challenges, with funds released in good time.

“On matters of insurance and work injury benefits, they are sometimes sued by illicit brewers; they are even fought by goons; they are sometimes injured. we need to improve the compensation of chiefs and assistant chiefs who suffer in the line of duty.”

He further appealed to the President to address transport issues, explaining that local administrators frequently have to move from one point to another and are often forced to use public means. Murkomen asked that the government provide them with proper means of transportation to carry out their duties efficiently.

This comes after he oversaw the passout of over 1000 chiefs in an event held at Embakasi B College.
