The family of a 21-year-old woman who died after falling from the 22nd floor of a building in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area is demanding answers as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Detectives based at Kilimani Police Station are investigating the death of Margaret Wambui, who fell from a building in Upper Hill. Investigators are expected to rely on CCTV footage and witness statements to establish what happened before the fatal fall.

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Wambui’s relatives and friends visited the building before proceeding to DCI Kilimani, where they sought information about the case and called for justice.

According to the family, Wambui was an intern at a restaurant next to the building. They were informed that she had entered the building and gone to the 22nd floor to take photographs before the incident.

Wambui’s mother, Wangari Gathogo, said the family first became concerned after receiving a phone call from her daughter’s friend.

“She told me she could not find Margaret and felt that something was wrong. She said she called her phone and someone answered it before telling us to go to DCI Kilimani,” Wangari said.

The family later learnt that Wambui had died after falling from the building.

Investigation into fatal fall

A relative, Muiga Gathogo, said the family has received different accounts of what happened and wants investigators to establish the truth.

“Someone here told me that she had allegedly jumped from the building, but by then she had already been taken to City Mortuary,” he said.

Muiga said the family does not want investigators to make assumptions before completing their inquiries.

“We want to know whether she jumped, whether someone pushed her, whether she was killed inside the building, or what exactly happened. We want justice for our child. If she had done something wrong, we want to know,” he said.

Wangari dismissed suggestions that her daughter had been facing personal challenges.

“She had no stress. She would come home, sleep, wake up and leave for work in the evening. She never spoke about any problems,” she said.

The family said Wambui’s mobile phone and work clothes were found inside her bag on the building. She had been expected to report to the hotel where she was working the previous evening, but reports indicate she never arrived.

The family also said they were informed that a security guard who had interacted with Wambui claimed he was in the washroom when she fell and only learnt of the incident afterwards.

Kilimani police are continuing with investigations and hope CCTV footage from the building will help establish the events leading to Wambui’s death. Authorities have not released any findings on the cause of the fall, and investigations remain ongoing.
