Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has endorsed three allies seeking elective positions in Kirinyaga County in the 2027 General Election, backing their bids during a public address in Kerugoya town.

Speaking on Sunday, July 19, 2026, the former Deputy President endorsed Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango for governor, Baragwi Member of County Assembly David Mathenge for senator, and incumbent Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina for a second term.

Gachagua said the three leaders had remained supportive of him during and after his impeachment in 2024.

While endorsing Murango’s gubernatorial bid, Gachagua cited the senator’s legal challenge against the government’s decision to allow rice imports, saying it reflected his commitment to protecting the interests of local farmers.

“When the government allowed the importation of rice, Murango went to court to challenge the decision. He refused to be compromised. And that governor’s seat that he wants, I believe you can trust him with Kirinyaga,” Gachagua said.

Backing loyal political allies

On Mathenge, Gachagua said the Baragwi MCA moved to court in an attempt to challenge his impeachment process in 2024 and described him as a leader who had remained loyal despite what he claimed were offers intended to influence his political stance.

“When I got impeached, he rushed to court to stop the process. If he is worthy, kindly consider him,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua also commended Njeri Maina for her legal advocacy on behalf of young people during the Gen Z-led anti-government protests, during which several protesters were killed.

“When our Gen Zs were killed, she was always in court defending them,” he said.

The endorsements come as political leaders begin positioning themselves and their allies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua has increasingly rallied support for leaders who remained aligned with him following his impeachment in 2004.
