Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has raised the alarm over what he described as questionable financial claims filed by a hospital in Mumias under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Speaking during a public engagement in Malava on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Mudavadi did not mince his words as he challenged the institution to come clean on how it handled funds allocated through SHA.

Mimi nataka niseme ile hospitali waliweka claims za SHA Ksh 117 billion, imelipwa Ksh82 million. I have records, I can produce evidence,” Mudavadi stated, insisting that accountability must cut across all sectors, including health institutions.

The Prime CS called out the hospital for hiding behind national debates on accountability to escape scrutiny at the local level. He emphasised that financial integrity must begin with those who directly receive funds before turning the blame on government systems.

Kama wamefanya mismanagement katika hio hospitali wasiletee taifa nzima. Let us be accountable. Mnataka serikali iwe accountable, na wewe wakati unapokea pesa za SHA, mbona wakisema produce evidence for the money you have received unakataa? Accountability ni kwa kila mtu. Hio ndio accountability sisi tunataka,” he said

Mudavadi’s remarks come at a time when the government is facing mounting pressure to tighten oversight in the rollout of the Social Health Authority, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

His comments spotlight a growing concern that while citizens demand accountability from government offices, some private and faith-based institutions entrusted with public health funds continue to operate without proper financial transparency.

The Prime CS argued that such practices not only undermine trust in the system but also risk sabotaging reforms aimed at making healthcare more affordable and accessible.

“We cannot demand accountability from government on one hand and refuse to account for money received on the other. That is double standards,” he stressed.

By turning the spotlight on the hospital, Mudavadi signalled a broader warning that the government will not shy away from calling out institutions mismanaging public resources. His remarks have opened a new chapter in the conversation around SHA funds, with Kenyans now questioning whether loopholes in the system are being exploited at the expense of ordinary patients.
