MP Nabwera moves to curb Disco Matanga in Lugari
By Mabonga Makhanu, September 28, 2025Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Nabii Nabwera has called for tough measures to curb disco matanga in his constituency, citing the practice as a major contributor to rising insecurity.
Speaking on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Nabwera linked several recent crimes to the night-long ceremonies.
He highlighted two incidents: the brutal murder of a 21-year-old girl in Chevaywa and the gang rape of a woman in Itumbu, with suspects reported to have come directly from disco matanga gatherings.
“There is growing concern over rising insecurity across Lugari. In Chevaywa, a young girl of only 21 years was brutally murdered. In Itumbu, a woman was gang-raped by individuals reported to have been coming from disco matanga,” Nabwera said.

“As your MP, I wish to call upon my people of Lugari, our administrators, and leaders at all levels to join hands and take responsibility,” he added.
Murkomen’s take on Disco Matanga
His remarks come just days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also called for the abolition of disco matanga, describing it as a breeding ground for crime.
Speaking during a Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Siaya County on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Murkomen linked the rising cases of crime, including defilement, to the practice, which he said is highly cherished in the area.

He castigated the culture, noting that it has caused more harm than good in the wider Western and Nyanza regions, urging community members to take the lead in curbing disco matanga before the enactment of a proposed law that seeks to ban it completely.
While in Homa Bay County, he also raised the same issue, saying that it was the one behind the high incidences of defilement witnessed in the county.
“Defilement is a big issue in Homa Bay County; the prevalence of defilement cases here is promoted by cultural practices, which include disco matanga, which has been banned in this area,” Murkomen said.
