Mogotio Member of Parliament (MP) Reuben Kiborek has dismissed the Gen Z-led commemorations and protests, terming them as lacking a genuine cause.

Speaking during a podcast on the night of Tuesday, June 24, the MP expressed concerns over what he described as a lack of discipline in the ongoing demonstrations.

Lakini discipline yetu, Wakenya, iko na shida; mnaenda maandamano, watu sita, wanne wanataka kupora mali,” he said.

According to Kiborek, although the youth are eager to be involved in the country’s governance, their demonstrations have increasingly been infiltrated by criminal elements.

He said that a significant number of those participating in the protests are not driven by patriotic intentions but are instead using the platform to loot and destroy property, pointing to recent cases where businesses have suffered losses.

He also accused opportunistic politicians of exploiting the protests to advance their personal agendas, further undermining the credibility of the movement.

Kuna opportunist demonstrators na kuna opportunist politicians; wanaona hii ni mwanya hii kitu tuekelee kwa serikali; wanataka free publicity wanandadia kwa wale vijana wetu,” he added.

In addition, he stated that certain civil society organisations and NGOs have joined the protests with the intention of pushing their own interests rather than supporting the original cause.

Kanja’s directive

Ahead of the June 25, 2025, protests, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja issued directives emphasising the need to uphold law and order while recognising the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

Speaking on June 24 outside Kenya Police Headquarters, Kanja called on protesters to maintain peace, cooperate with law enforcement, and avoid provocative acts or entry into restricted zones, citing provisions in the Public Order Act and the Protected Areas Act.

He cautioned that any acts of violence or lawlessness would render the protests illegal, and police would respond decisively to prevent disruption.

Kanja also reassured police officers of leadership support, commended their commitment to duty, and called for public respect toward security personnel.

He urged citizens to report any suspicious activities confidentially to assist in identifying criminal networks, stressing the importance of public safety during the Gen Z-led demonstrations commemorating the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
