-Nairobi County has ordered the relocation of all illegally sited fuel and gas facilities near residential estates after a blaze at a Four Ways petrol station, Kiambu, caused severe damage to properties.

In a statement on April 2, 2026, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, announced that anyone operating a petrol station within or near a residential area must relocate it immediately to a designated, safer zone to prevent potential hazards.

Mosiria said the directive also applies to LPG plants operating illegally in residential neighbourhoods and asked the owners to act responsibly by relocating these facilities away from residential areas.

“This incident serves as a serious wake-up call. Anyone who has established a petrol station within or near a residential area should take immediate steps to relocate it to a safer, designated zone to prevent such dangerous occurrences. The same applies to LPG gas plants that are illegally operating within residential neighborhoods. Owners must act responsibly and move these facilities away from areas where people live,” Mosiria said.

Fire outbreak

The statement comes hours after a fire broke out on the night of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, following a reported fuel tanker explosion at the petrol station.

According to a statement by the Kenya Red Cross Society, the fire incident occurred at Total Fourways Petrol Station along Kiambu Road.

“A fire outbreak has been reported at a Total Fourways Station along Kiambu Road. Emergency response teams at the scene are working to contain the situation,” the Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch noted.

Mosiria added that he visited the scene to support emergency responders, praising their quick action and professionalism in averting a potentially serious disaster.
