Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto and Johnson Sakaja, accusing the two leaders of presiding over the decline of Nairobi and allowing corruption, insecurity and poor governance to flourish.

In a statement on his X handle issued after meeting a delegation of opinion leaders from Westlands Constituency led by senior counsel Nelson Havi on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Gachagua said the country’s capital had deteriorated significantly and called for change ahead of what he referred to as the formation of the “6th administration”.

According to Gachagua, Nairobi has lost its identity as the “Green City in the Sun” and has instead become a city struggling with insecurity, corruption, poor service delivery and unplanned demolitions.

“The City of Nairobi is in ruins. Total failure! It is no longer the Green City in the Sun,” Gachagua stated.

The former deputy president fingered the national government and the Nairobi County administration for failing to protect residents, alleging that criminal gangs operate with impunity.

“Mr William Ruto and Mr Johnson Sakaja have transformed Nairobi into a city of shame. Goons have taken over the city. The state-sponsored militia works with the police, and with Ruto’s blessings, they operate with impunity, making everyone scared and causing tourists and investors to stay away,” he added.

Gachagua also further lamented that forced evictions and demolitions have left vulnerable families homeless.

“Targeted demolitions and evictions are the order of the day. Women and children have their homes destroyed and spend their nights out in the cold,” he stated.

Uproar over Nairobi’s state of public services

He further painted a grim picture of public services in the capital, alleging that schools are overcrowded, drainage infrastructure has collapsed, and corruption is rampant within City Hall.

“Public schools are congested, and many children are at home. Drainage systems have broken down. City Hall is a den of corruption and filth,” he noted.

He singled out Nairobi’s Planning Department, claiming corruption had become deeply entrenched.

“The other name for the Planning Department at City Hall should be the Corruption Department,” Gachagua said.

The DCP party leader said that he received disturbing accounts as narrated by the delegation he hosted at his residence from Westlands in Nairobi regarding the state of governance in the capital.

“It is in this demoralisation and quest for change that veteran lawyer Nelson Havi, SC. Led a delegation of opinion leaders from Westlands Constituency to present their views on the liberation of our country and Nairobi City County and the formation of the 6th administration. I am disturbed by the graphic details presented to me on the rot in our capital city, Nairobi,” he concluded.
