The government has invited bids as it embarks on the revival of Fluorspar Mining Company in Kimwarer, Elgeyo-Marakwet.

Company was closed down four years ago after market conditions led to a dramatic reduction in fluorspar prices and demand rendering many company operations unsustainable in the current market.

In an advertisement in local dailies yesterday, the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs said the new investor will exploit fluorite deposits using the existing project infrastructure including the processing plant and mining equipment.

“New company will also utilise available transport facilities and ferry the product to Mombasa for exports to international markets. The deal will be under public private partnership arrangement,” the advertisement.

According to the ministry, the facility already has existing infrastructure including a processing plant, storage facilities, warehouse, diesel power generators, an office block, staff squatters, a community canteen among others.  The government is seeking an investor who will finance, revive and operate the mining company.

“There may be a need for the investor to rehabilitate and maintain the machinery and other assets left by the former mining company. Those interested to invest in the company have until April 26 to submit their bids,” the advertisement read further.

Mining Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya (pictured) says the government is projecting that a new investor begins operations by June.
