Lawyer and activist Miguna Miguna has responded to President William Ruto’s remarks about initiating constitutional amendments to ‘enrich Kenya’s democratic experience’.

In a tweet shared, the firebrand lawyer affirmed that there was nothing wrong with the constitution for it to need changes. He added that all that the constitution requires is honest and consistent implementation, application and respect.

“I will say it for the avoidance of doubt. There is nothing wrong with the Constitution. No defect. No errors. Nothing that requires amendments or mutilations. The Constitution of Kenya requires honest and consistent implementation, application and respect. Period!” he stated.

Miguna further stated that the constitutional change was not the platform on which the head of state was elected.

“If Kenya Kwanza wants to invite their waterloo the way Napoleon did in 1815, let them call a referendum on their attempt to mutilate the constitution of Kenya. We dare anyone to try. That wasn’t the platform on which Ruto was elected! Thank me later!” he added.

Earlier, President Ruto asked the house leadership to initiate constitutional amendments to ‘enrich the country’s democratic experience.

In a memo addressed to the Senate and National Assembly speakers, the head of state noted that the changes will help enhance institutional capacities.

“A number of these opportunities call for measures to adjust the constitutional framework,” Ruto stated.
