Kenya African National Union (KANU) spokesperson Tony Gachoka has opened up on his political consultations with Siaya Senator James Aggrey Orengo as he popularises his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

Taking to his official X account on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Gachoka described the meeting with Orengo as part of his ongoing preparations, strategy sessions, and negotiations aimed at consolidating support within opposition political formations ahead of the next general election cycle.

He said the discussions with Orengo form part of broader efforts to align with like-minded political actors under the “United Opposition” umbrella, which he claims is working toward dislodging the current administration in Nairobi and beyond.

Talks with Orengo

According to Gachoka, consultations with senior political figures are part of strategic groundwork meant to strengthen his political base in the capital.

He named Orengo as one of the key figures he has engaged, describing him as an experienced political actor whose input is valuable in shaping an effective campaign strategy.

The talks, he said, are focused on building a unified front capable of mounting a serious challenge in Nairobi politics.

“PREPARATIONS, STRATEGY & NEGOTIATIONS. Consulting James Aggrey Orengo ahead of my gubernatorial bid for Nairobi, Linda Wanainchi and United Opposition in removing Kasongo’s disastrous regime,” the veteran journalist stated.

Gachoka also referenced what he termed ‘growing unity within opposition circles’, saying he is aligned with efforts to consolidate political forces under a shared agenda in an effort to oust President William Ruto during the 2027 General Election.

“We are all united in Wantam,” he said, using a slogan increasingly associated with opposition mobilisation efforts.

Early Nairobi race positioning

Gachoka’s remarks add to growing political activity around the Nairobi gubernatorial race, which is expected to attract multiple aspirants from both ruling and opposition coalitions.

Early positioning and alliances are often key in Nairobi’s competitive political environment, where coalition-building and grassroots mobilisation play a critical role.

Gachoka’s comments also come amid ongoing realignments within opposition ranks, with various leaders exploring potential partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections.

His engagement with Orengo is likely to fuel further speculation about broader coordination between veteran politicians and emerging aspirants seeking to shape Nairobi’s political direction, with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is an active member of the Linda Mwananchi movement, which Orengo is part of, being one of the front-runners in the race.

As campaigns gradually take shape, attention is expected to shift toward formal declarations, party endorsements, and the formation of structured campaign teams in the capital’s increasingly crowded political field.
