A section of leaders and the Njuri Ncheke council of elders have accused the Judiciary of maliciously dragging the impeachment case facing Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Senators Samson Cherarkey (Nandi), Munyi Mundigi (Embu), Kathuri Murungi (Meru) and a section of MPs from the region have criticised the Chief Justice for failing to stem corruption in courts, a move they said is denying many Kenyans justice.

Cherarkey, who was speaking yesterday during the burial of the mother to Meru deputy governor Isaac Mutuma, claimed Meru has been denied justice even after the Senate impeached Kawira. “Kawira was impeached correctly and constitutionally by the Upper House which is mandated by the law and it stands that way we don’t know why his deputy has not been sworn in yet.”

Kathuri said Kawira has been impeached about more than once and it is high time the region was listened to and saved from sinking further. Mundigi backed the sentiments claiming a section of the Senate invited Kawira to the House to answer questions of integrity, a move termed illegal and parts of a hide-and-seek plan to save her.

Swearing in

MPs John Paul ( Igembe South), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania  East ) and John Mutunga (Tigania West) also expressed support for the impeachment. Political temperatures went a notch higher after MCAs vowed to swear in the deputy governor on March 15.

The county ward reps said they are ready to swear in their own governor if the court rules the case unfairly. More than 200 Njuri Ncheke elders who joined the mourners called on the court to fast-track the case and bring justice to the Meru community.

The county chief was saved after the High Court on  December 18 last year extended the conservatory orders that effectively halted her impeachment for a further 120 days.
