Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Opposition’s meeting

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka is convening an urgent meeting with opposition leaders to address the recent abduction and release of Juja MP George Koimburi.

The meeting aims to assess the state of political harassment and intimidation in Kenya, particularly by the Kenya Kwanza regime, as stated by Kalonzo.

“If an MP who is entitled to security gets abducted in broad daylight, it means Kenyans are on their own,” Kalonzo condemned Koimburi’s abduction, highlighting concerns about the safety of Kenyans.

The discussions are expected to focus on formulating a response to these incidents and strengthening the opposition’s strategy amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Economic Update and Public Finance Review launch

Today, the University of Nairobi will host the World Bank’s Kenya Economic Update and Public Finance Review launch, a pivotal event amid Kenya’s economic woes.

The launch will analyse fiscal policies, debt repayment challenges, and growth projections, with 2024 GDP growth at 4.5% and a forecast for 2025–2027. President Ruto, whose administration faced backlash over the 2024 Finance Bill protests, may attend or issue a statement defending his economic policies.

Senate debate

The Kenyan Senate is expected to be in session on May 27, 2025, as part of its regular calendar, with a strong likelihood of debates addressing the recent surge in political violence, including Koimburi’s abduction.

Senators, such as Busia’s Okiya Omtatah, may table motions demanding investigations or calls for reforms.

Finance Bill

The ongoing 2025/2026 budget process is likely to dominate discussions. The Finance Bill 2025, tabled on April 30, 2025, proposing Ksh4.34 trillion in spending, is under review, with public participation ongoing and committees like the Finance and National Planning Committee analysing stakeholder input. MPs may discuss proposed reallocations, such as Ksh 35 billion for education, or fiscal strategies to address the Ksh876.1 billion deficit, potentially in committee meetings or plenary sessions.

Gachagua’s political manoeuvres

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, impeached on October 17, 2024, remains a potent force after visiting Koimburi in hospital on May 26, 2025.

Today, he may issue statements or attend events, leveraging his Mt. Kenya base to critique Ruto’s administration.
