The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has condemned the death of 40-year-old Erick Kiptanui Koros, who passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after he was detained over a Ksh8000 debt.

The area chief is said to have requested the deceased’s wife to accompany him to the police station without disclosing the reason. Upon reaching there, she was informed that Koros had hanged himself using a duvet strap.

The rest of the family was later called in after the body of Koros was taken to Nakuru City Mortuary. Rongai Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Donatta Atieno told local media that the person of interest was booked at the station at around 3:30 pm, further adding that the man was found dead inside the cell by officers who were on duty at the time of the incident.

”We will forward the matter to the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority. We are waiting for the family to come forward and record a statement on Friday,” Atieno said.
