Commemoration of Wangari Maathai Day

Today, March 3, 2025, marks Wangari Maathai Day, dedicated to honouring the late Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai’s legacy in environmental conservation.

The day, which was officially recognized by the African Union in 2012, is observed alongside Africa Environment Day.

Maathai, the founder of the Green Belt Movement, was well-known for her efforts against deforestation and her advocacy for sustainable development.

This year, the Green Belt Movement has written an open letter to President William Ruto expressing concerns about current environmental policies that they believe contradict Maathai’s legacy.

The letter highlights issues such as the proposed appropriation of Karura Forest land for road construction, deforestation in Suam Forest, and the planned road through the Aberdare Forest.

“Mr President, how is it that Wangari’s dreams are now at risk of being eroded by policies and actions that seem to stray from the ideals of environmental justice, community empowerment, and sustainable development?” the organization questioned in their letter.

The movement urged the president to ensure that Kenya remains a country where nature is cherished and protected.

“We urge the President to reconsider these decisions and honour Prof. Wangari Maathai’s vision by prioritizing environmental protection,” the organization added.

On March 2, 2025, the Pope met with senior Vatican officials while continuing his treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

The Vatican confirmed that his condition remains stable, though he still requires mechanical ventilation and high-flow oxygen therapy.
