The old rivalry in Kenya’s famed ‘Mashemeji Derby’ between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is poised for renewal this Sunday when the two giants meet in a titanic Kenyan Premier League (KPL) encounter  at Kasarani stadium.

K’Ogalo have consistently thrashed Ingwe in the last four years, leaving the derby predictably drab. However, Gor’s declining strength coupled with Leopards’ strong start to the 2019/20 season has left Kenya’s oldest club exuding with confidence ahead of the game.

A weak K’Ogalo represents the best chance for Leopards to end their eight-game winless run in which Gor have emerged on top seven times, only drawing once. The last time Ingwe tasted victory over their sworn rivals was in June 2016.

Fan apathy ensued due to this and last season, the fixture was downgraded from a derby to a normal game. K’Ogalo went ahead to win both games and put five past Ingwe over the two legs.

Since then, a lot has changed so drastically and Leopards have a strong momentum this season. They go into the derby with enthusiasm and anticipation almost of yore.

They have not lost in their last seven games and have picked four victories in the league during that period. Their rivals are on the other hand are reeling after being swatted out of continental championships followed by a humiliating loss at the hands of Mathare United on Wednesday.

Ingwe fraternity have harnessed resources to motivate the team overcome Gor on Sunday and build on the ensuing feel good factor to end their 22-year wait for the league title.

Both teams are tied second on the Premier League table with 15 points, one shy of leaders Tusker who play fourth-placed KCB tomorrow.

Victory for either Gor or Leopards assures top spot on the table depending on tomorrow’s results.“We are in a good stead football-wise and this fixture is a potential three-pointer. Players are aware of its importance and are raring to go,” said Leopards assistant coach Anthony ‘Modo’ Kimani.
