KWS launches urgent tracking operation after hyena is spotted in Syokimau

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched a rapid response and monitoring operation after reports of a hyena sighting in Syokimau, following growing concern among residents.

According to a public notice issued by the wildlife agency on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the incident was reported on Sunday, May 10, 2026, along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive, prompting immediate deployment of a Problem Animal Control (PAC) team.

“Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) wishes to assure residents of Syokimau and surrounding areas that response operations are ongoing following reports of a hyena sighting on Sunday, 11th May 2026, along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive,” KWS stated.

Footprints confirmed

KWS said that although the animal was not directly sighted by the responding team, fresh footprints were discovered in the area, confirming recent movement of the hyena within the neighbourhood.

Preliminary tracking indicates that the animal may be moving through bushy and isolated land behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport towards Katani.

“Although the animal was not directly sighted by the responding Problem Animal Control (PAC) team, fresh footprints confirmed its recent movement within the area. Ground surveillance and monitoring have since been intensified, with preliminary indications suggesting the animal is moving through bushy isolated land behind JKIA towards Katani,” the statement reads.

Surveillance intensified

Following the discovery, KWS has intensified ground surveillance and monitoring operations to trace and safely contain the animal.

The agency assured residents that all necessary precautionary measures are being undertaken and emphasized that there is no immediate cause for panic.

Residents of Syokimau and surrounding areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid approaching or provoking the animal, and ensure children are closely supervised.

KWS further urged members of the public to promptly report any wildlife sightings to the nearest KWS station or local authorities to assist in ongoing tracking efforts.

The wildlife agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding both human life and wildlife, noting that rapid response systems are in place to handle such incidents.
