Kuppet issues immediate demand for members pay rise

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has demanded for an immediate action towards awarding teachers a pay rise before month end.

KUPPET Secretary General, Akelo Misori yesterday said the union’s National Governing Council (NGC) held a meeting with President William Ruto in May at State House and he assured the Government’s commitment to award teachers a salary rise of at least 10 per cent upon passage of the Finance Bill.

He, however, regretted that despite the assurances, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) have not taken any action.

“Regrettably and despite assurances, TSC and SRC are still going round in circles even as teachers suffer the burden of increased taxes and high inflation that the Government has committed to cushion them against,” said Misori in a press conference held at KUPPET offices in Nairobi.

With only two weeks left until month end, he said there is no further delay and TSC must occasion a meeting with KUPPET to work out the increment and have the same factored in teachers’ salary this month.

“KUPPET demands immediate action by SRC and TSC to conclude the salary increment for teachers that has already been agreed between the union and the President,” Misori demanded.

He said the union has had numerous correspondences with TSC over review of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and when the President gave it a nod, they thought that Treasury and TSC were aware.
